Staff, students and parents/carers at Summerhill Academy were encouraged to walk to school to promote exercise and the benefits of keeping active.
This initiative has been started with Living Streets who are in partnership with Bristol City Council. Living Streets is a charity that aims to create a nation where walking is the natural choice for everyday local journeys. Their mission is to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more.
Families were encouraged to meet staff by St George’s Park and take the route through the park to school, joined by the Living Streets mascot, Strider. Whilst on route, they took in the lovely natural surroundings of the park.
Davinia Varela-Lindley Year 4 teacher said, “It is particularly important for us to have children think about their mode of transport and how walking can benefit their well-being. The effect will hopefully be to lessen traffic congestion in a particularly busy part of our community and have an impact on our local environment.”
