Senior Site Manager
“I left school with no qualifications, and never imagined I would be back working in a school”
I left school with no qualifications, and never imagined I would be back working in a school. However, after being the Primary Carer for my children when they were young, I was looking for a new challenge. I then started at King’s Oak Academy (previously Kingsfield) in 2008 as a Design and Technology Technician. My background was very much a ‘jack of all trades’ having worked in retail management, labouring on a building site, and plumbing previously. During my time at the school, I was heavily involved in the significant improvements made to the schools Health and Safety agenda. As a result, I was afforded the opportunity to set up and lead a technician forum for all Federation schools, where technicians could meet to share best practice.
After 6 and a half years in this role, I felt that I had gone as far as I could and needed a whole new challenge, and so when the post of Caretaker at Summerhill Academy was advertised in 2013, I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity for me to make an exciting career move. I secured the role, and as a very practical person, I thrived on the opportunity to work proactively to make significant improvements within the School. In my first year at Summerhill Academy, we achieved ‘outstanding’ in Health and Safety, which was such a proud moment for me and the School.
Soon after a vacancy became available at Begbrook Primary Academy, and I became a Senior Primary Site Manager them and Summerhill Academy, a post of which I still hold now. Within 13 months in this role, Health and Safety and Fire Assessments became outstanding at Begbrook, and have remained outstanding since. Being part of a Federation that works collaboratively has meant that I have been asked so support other Schools when needed, and this is something I thrive on.
My days are so varied, and are never the same. When I go home, I know I have made a huge impact on people’s lives by keeping them safe during the course of the day and providing a safe environment- whether it is a child, teacher, or visitor I know they are safe on our sites. I feel extremely valued by the Federation and everywhere I go everybody knows me. I have received staff nominations, which is really nice as it shows how much people appreciate me.
Throughout my various roles, the Federation has provided me with on the job training as well as outsourced training. I love that within the Federation, if I can identify a need for change or improvement, I am given the scope to make it happen as colleagues and managers listen to feedback and support you. I am pleased and proud of my achievements and working for the Federation and would recommend the CLF without hesitation.
