A newly formed basketball team from Begbrook Primary Academy have become double basketball champions in their first two tournaments!

The mixed squad of Year 5 & 6 boys and girls, who train in after school clubs organised by teaching staff, took part in a competition staged at City Academy Bristol organised by the Cabot Learning Federation for teams inside and outside the Federation. The second competition was staged at the SGS Wise Campus the home of the Bristol Flyers Basketball Team.

At City Academy the Begbrook team played well and won all of their six round robin matches beating Minerva Primary Academy in a hotly contested final. At the Wise Campus, again, the team played incredibly well winning all of their six round robin matches beating Victoria Park Primary in the final.

In addition to this incredible achievement a number of the Begbrook players, both girls and boys, have been scouted by the Bristol flyers for their junior development teams.

Jess Burchill, Head of PE at Begbrook said, “I am immensely proud of the boys and girls, they were so enthusiastic throughout the training sessions and the competitions. Pupils who struggle academically in class have grown in confidence, motivation and stature since taking part and this has impacted positively on their learning in the classroom.”
